Dreamland Paws: 5 Tips to Help Your Dog Sleep Soundly Through the Night

I think we all face the same challenge, whether you have a new puppy or a dog that was never properly trained to sleep through the night without waking you up. After adopting a rescue dog, we found ourselves getting up at least four times a night. But don't fret— training takes time, and here are a few tips and tricks to help you and your furry friend sleep soundly through the night. However every dog is different, and owners have different habits, so these are just a few tips that worked for me.

Why Do Dogs Continuously Wake Up in the Night?

Dogs may wake up due to boredom if they haven't had enough exercise or stimulation during the day, leaving them with too much energy to sleep. Sometimes, it’s due to routine, as dogs thrive on consistency. If you've been getting up repeatedly during the night, your dog may learn to expect this as part of their routine. To prevent this, it's important to establish a consistent routine and make it clear to your dog that you won't be getting up in the middle of the night.

1. Establish a Routine

Dogs are big on routine, so their behavior often mirrors yours. It helps to follow a specific meal time, walk time, and bedtime, so they soon learn when it’s time to settle down. While weekends might vary, try to keep the schedule as consistent as possible.

2. Provide a Chew Toy

Giving your dog a chew toy or treat just before bedtime helps them dispel boredom and calm down. We like to use chewable toothbrushes or alligators, which are also beneficial for their teeth. Licky mats or stimulating toys can also help calm your dog before bedtime.

3. Take Them for a Walk

Ensure your dog has been out for a walk before bedtime so they don’t have excess energy preventing them from sleeping. It also gives them a chance to go to the toilet before settling down for the night.

4. Avoid Getting Up

If you consistently get up when your dog whines or barks, they’ll learn to associate this behavior with waking you up. They’ll think it’s acceptable to wake you for attention. However, if your dog genuinely needs to go out, it’s important to let them out.

5. Create a Comfortable Sleeping Area

Where your dog sleeps is a personal preference—some people can’t imagine not having their dog in bed with them, and I’m one of them. Regardless, it’s crucial to create a comfortable area for your dog, ensuring it’s quiet, cozy, and safe to help them settle easier.

Training a dog can be tiring, but with reward-based training, patience, and the right techniques, you’ll gradually see the results you hope for. With treats and praise, your dog will soon learn what is right and wrong. However, nothing works instantly—it takes time. Sticking to a routine will quickly help your pup settle in.
